The Prophet's Mosque features a distinctive green dome above the Prophet's Chamber, serving as a prominent symbol. This dome was painted green in 1253 AH and is visible from a distance to visitors approaching from the south or east due to the absence of obstructing buildings.
Interestingly, the dome was not constructed until the reign of Sultan Qalawun and initially bore the color of the wood used in its construction. Over time, it underwent several color changes, being painted white, then blue, before finally assuming its current green hue. Initially known as the white dome, Al-Faiha, and the blue dome, it eventually became recognized as the Green Dome.
In line with the ongoing maintenance of the Noble Chamber, the dome's coating is regularly renewed to address any color changes resulting from weather conditions. This ensures that the dome continues to stand as a significant feature of the Prophet's Mosque.
