Performing funeral prayers in the Prophets Mosque

Wed Dec 24 2025

Residents of Madinah have a tradition of bringing their deceased loved ones to the Prophet's Mosque for funeral prayers. If possible, they also choose to bury them at Al-Baqi’ alongside the Prophet's esteemed companions and followers. This practice is rooted in the belief in the special virtues of prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque and the large congregation of worshippers there.

The authorities in Madinah have made it easier for people to carry out funeral prayers and burials. They have opened the doors of Al-Baqi' Cemetery to visitors during official visiting hours and after the five daily prayers. Funeral prayers are conducted after the daily prayers, allowing funeral attendees and Mosque visitors to pay their respects and bury their deceased loved ones at the cemetery.
