Al Ramal

In the Islamic tradition, the act of Al Ramal, which involves walking briskly during the first three circuits of the Tawaf, is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This practice is specifically recommended for men during the performance of 'Umrah and the initial Tawaf Al Qudoom, which is the circumambulation upon arrival in Mecca. The purpose of Al Ramal is to emulate the Prophet's actions, and it involves taking quick, short steps.

It's important to note that Al Ramal is distinct from jogging and is not required during the Tawaf Al Ifaadah, which is part of the Hajj rituals, nor during the farewell Tawaf Al Wadaa. Additionally, voluntary Tawaf is not a practice when one is not in a state of Ihram (the sacred state for Hajj or 'Umrah).

While performing Al Ramal, it is crucial to be mindful of the surrounding crowd to avoid causing harm to oneself or others. Men who are accompanied by their families should also consider their comfort and not make the experience difficult for them. This practice is a demonstration of vigor and is intended for men, as it is not a Sunnah for women. The remaining four circuits of the Tawaf are completed at a normal walking pace, reflecting the ritual's balance between vigor and reverence.
